Proposing solutions to business problems could be a competitive process at agencies. I had developed a reputation for the “long shot” concept, that was intended to show the agency’s forward thinking. The concept I contributed to Unilever Hair Care was no different. I used abstracted images of models’ hair instead of product shots and bold graphic treatments for headlines. I also proposed a conversational user interface, more than a decade before ChatGPT.

The conversational UI appeared to users as a live chat. Instead of reading product descriptions, users could ask a virtual salon expert for recommendations based on their needs. AI would recognize keywords in the chat and generate search results for product matches and relevant content from across Unilever’s many hair care brands.

Users could select product recommendations to purchase online, or find retailers in their vicinity. Content results, such as expert styling tips, could be viewed in the application, without leaving the experience.
